UMI X2: Clarifies with interview to GizChai and FB wall posts
https://gizchai.blogspot.com/2013/06/umi-x2-clarifies-with-interview-to.html
After our previous post on UMI about the delay on the X2 the company has again come up with some clarifications. I was pleasantly surprised to get a call from Vivek from the Androidguruz team in China a couple of hours after posting the article. He assured us that it was the customs and bitter backbiting by the local phone companies in India which were delaying the launch of the X2 by throwing legal hurdles in the customs release of the UMI X2 from Delhi airport.
Today we got facebook updates from UMI mobile India after nearly a week of silence.
Here are the excerpts from the interview.
Mohit: So why this delay?
Vivek: Well customs have been giving us a lot of problems, we faced similar issues when the initial shipment of Zopo phones landed. Now we are being questioned how can a phone with 32GB ROM and 2GB RAM being categorized in such a low price tag?
We have also faced a lot of administrative errors and delays from the customs office, like today their ERP software and server is down till afternoon, we had an issue last time when the shipment was delayed quoting "Printer not working" we even offered them to provide a printer to speed up the process but then you know how things are.
Mohit: What is the status now?
Vivek: We expect customs clearance by tomorrow (11th June 2013) and after we receive the shipment, the routine checks and other things should see the mobile handsets reaching consumers in a couple of weeks.
We are trying our best but local competitors are making things difficult for us too! They are using their influence in the customs to come up with multiple issues. We even had to show the company registration details of UMI China, product info to pacify them that a handset at this low price is indeed possible.
Mohit: What about people asking refunds? what is the status there?
Vivek: UMI cannot touch the money from PayTM until we show the proof of delivery to them. The money is held in an Escrow account and is safe. We have processed several hundred requests for refunds and people have already started getting refunds. Consumers need not be afraid about their investment, we will ensure delivery or refund of the amounts.
Throughout the interview I found Vivek to be sincere on his words here. Whenever we wrote in negative about the phone and delivery status UMI or Androidguruz have reached out and clarified in person. We hope the deliveries resume ASAP. We will keep readers informed about the developments.
On the bright side the 32GB ROM ultimate editions of Iocean, Jiayu and Zopo are to launch in the coming weeks too. When we get samples of the phone we will do an in depth review and comparison.
Till then cheers.
